The building was originally owned by a wealthy Indian family, who spared no expense in the construction and decoration. Most of the fittings were imported from India. The hand carved doors at the arched entrance have the traditional brass knobs. These knobs were originally used in India as protection from elephants but, here on Zanzibar, they're just an attractive decorative feature.
Chavda overlooks the Roman Catholic Church. The Chavda hotel is located inside the maze of alleyways on the Shangani peninsular around the corner from the Dhow Palace, just a couple of minutes walk from the main sites of Stone Town. Rooms
As with so many Stone Town hotels, you do hear the noise of the residents who live around you at night and the muezzin calling from the mosque in the early mornings. However, you'll find this anywhere in this ancient city and it adds to the atmosphere. Room facilities
Dining The hotel has a well-stocked roof top bar, ideally situated to give a panoramic view of the city, the ocean and its adjoining islets. The Kisimani Bar, located at lobby level, provides live music entertainment, while the Kisimani Restaurant offers an á la carte menu for lunch and dinner. The cuisine includes Indian Tandoor, Chinese and continental dishes. Breakfast is served in the Coffee Shop. The rooftop restaurant is decorated with latticework and features marble-topped tables, antique chairs and dark-wood railings. The restaurant is a good place to unwind and it serves a good breakfast and very tasty snacks throughout the day. It has especially good curries and the menu includes Chinese, Indian and European dishes. We recommend the restaurant. The bar staff are friendly and there is a good selection of drinks.
