[Click Map for larger view]
Day 1 After an early morning breakfast, you gather your equipment and transfer to the starting point at Umbwe Gate (+- 2 100 m). Here the porters will arrange their loads and the party is assembled for the first day’s hike. You climb through rain forest for the duration of the hike until you reach Bivouac 1 at around 2 900 m. Here you overnight. (+- 5 hours hike). The path gains altitude quickly and has spectacular views of deep gorges, with glimpses of Kilimanjaro in the background. It is essential to take this path very slowly as you will be increasing in altitude very fast, which most of the time will cause problems acclimatizing.
Day 2 After breakfast, you head out towards Barranco Hut (3 900m). You will also have the option to camp at Bivouac 2 at 3 780m should your group not be able to reach Barranco Hut on this day. This day entails walking on a fairly steep area in the forest along a sharp ridge before the path flattens close to Barranco Hut. This stretch of the climb is also fairly short with a steep incline of 1 000m so walking slowly is also very essential to avoid altitude problems. Time spent hiking on this day depends on the pace of the group, but is normally roughly 5 hours.
Day 3 After breakfast you conquer the obstacle known as the Great Barranco Wall before continuing on to the Karanga Valley. You overnight at Karanga Valley at 4 200m. This day is once again a very short approximate 8 km hike and should also not be rushed.
Day 4 You have breakfast before joining up with the Mweka route. Here you turn toward Barafu camp, situated on a narrow ridge at 4 600 m. You get as much rest as possible before the wake-up call at 23:00 (5 hour hike.)
