MACHAME ROUTE MARANGU ROUTE

MACHAME 8 DAY PACKAGE DETAILS
With its diverse scenery and limitless vistas, the Machame route must rate as one of the most scenic routes on the mountain. While accommodation on the Machame is purely in tents, this is the biggest attraction for nature lovers and adventurers alike. One gets the distinct feeling of being very close to nature. The smells, the sights, everything seems acutely natural. The route almost encircles Kibo on its approach to the summit and this meandering proves to be a virtual "slideshow" over 6 days. From awesome full moon sunsets at Shira camp, to swirling mists in the Barranco Valley, every day is filled with memorable sights. Some enlightened souls have referred to this route as the Whiskey route and, compared to other more utilised routes, it certainly deserves that title.

Machame 8 days package (6 days hiking) Itinerary

Day 1
Depending on your own plans, you may already be in the town of Moshi or are arriving by plane at Kilimanjaro airport. Should it be the latter, a one hour transfer from Kilimanjaro airport will bring you to Moshi, "headquarters" of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Our overnight is at the Springlands Hotel with spectacular views of Kili in the distance. (Approximately 900 meters a.m.s.l.)

Day 2
After an early morning breakfast, we gather our equipment and transfer to the starting point at Machame Gate (1 750m). Here the porters will arrange their loads and the party is assembled for the first day’s hike. We climb through rain forest for the duration of the hike until we reach Machame camp at around 2 950 m. Here we overnight. (+- 6 hours hike)

Day 3
After breakfast, we head out towards Shira encampment. Leaving the rain forest, we enter an area (moorland) very reminiscent of the Cape mountains with several Fynbos species to be found. Reaching the Shira Plateau, we turn westward until we reach Shira encampment at around 3 800 m. Here we overnight. (6 hours hike)

Day 4
The toughest day so far. We start out just after breakfast and steadily climb into the desert landscape surrounding Lava Tower. Serving as the additional day for acclimatisation, Lava Tower is perfectly positioned for an afternoon lunch stop. At 4 600 m, it is the highest point so far reached on the route. After lunch, we descend again by almost 700 m to Barranco encampment for an overnight. (3 950 m) (8 hours hike)

Day 5
After breakfast we conquer the Great Barranco Wall before continuing on to Karanga Valley before joining the Mweka route. Here we turn toward Barafu camp, situated on a narrow ridge at 4 600 m. We get as much rest as possible before the wake-up call at 23:00 (9 hour hike.)

Day 6
We rise at around 23:00 pm the previous evening. After tea and biscuits, we start at 12:00 midnight and ascend through heavy scree in single file toward Stella Point (5 700m), approximately 6 hours away. At around sunrise, we reach Stella Point on the crater rim and after a short rest, set off immediately for Uhuru Peak, some 1 1/2 hours further. After reaching Uhuru, we spend a short while and start the descent back to Barafu. After a short rest, we then head down for Mweka encampment for our overnight (3 100 m)

Day 7
After breakfast, we head directly for the park gate at Mweka which we reach at around 12:00 midday. Transfer back to the hotel for a welcome shower and a celebratory dinner. Overnight at Springlands In Moshi.

Day 8
After breakfast, an early transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for your flight home. Depending on your itinerary, you may embark on an add-on such as a safari or Zanzibar.

NOTE - We also offer the Arrow Glacier finish as an alternative summit option on the Machame route. Cost is the same as for normal itinerary.

MARANGU 8 DAY PACKAGE DETAILS
When choosing this route, you are almost guaranteed to find other hikers along the way either going up or coming down. The ascent and descent route is exactly the same and accommodation is shared in comfortable huts. These huts are equipped with electric lights and mattresses and can be quite pleasant if you are with a group of friends or like minded people. The Marangu route is affectionately referred to as the "Coca-Cola" route or the "tourist" route. Through these nicknames, a perception has been created that the Marangu route is physically easy. Unfortunately for some, this is not the case. While the going is certainly more comfortable in the accommodation department, the actual route is by all standards the same as any other route and for a lot of people, even more difficult.

Marangu 8 day package (6 day hiking)    Itinerary

Day 1
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a one hour transfer brings you to the town of Moshi, "headquarters" of Kilimanjaro. Our overnight is at the Springlands Hotel with spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the distance. (Approximately 900 m)

Day 2
After an early morning breakfast, we gather our equipment and transfer to the starting point at Marangu Gate (1 400m). Here the porters will arrange their loads and the party is assembled for the first day’s hike. We climb through rain forest for the first stretch of the hike until we reach Mandara Hut at around 2 700 m. Here we overnight.

Day 3
After breakfast, we head out for a gentle walk towards Horombo Hut. We leave the rain forest within a few minutes walk and enter the transition between rain forest and moorland. A short detour via Maundi crater will afford you an impressive view of the magnificent Kibo18 kilometers away, normally not seen until much later in the day. A 6 hour hike brings us to Horombo Hut at 3 720 m. Here we overnight.

Day 4
On the 6 day hike, this is the day for additional acclimatisation. Whilst not compulsory, we strongly recommend that you hike out towards Mawenzi Hut, around 6 kilometers away as the crow flies. With the hut as your target, allow around 4 hours there and three hours back. Mawenzi Hut is at around 4 600 m. After returning to Horombo, we have an early dinner and overnight (3 720 m)

Day 5
After breakfast we set out at a slow pace towards Kibo. Depending on conditions and group sentiment, you can either take the high road or the low road. Both will bring you to Kibo Hut, across the Saddle. We arrive at Kibo Hut at around 3:00 pm, in time for a relaxing afternoon lazing about and resting as much as possible. After a final briefing, we tuck in for the night and try and get as much rest as possible before the late night wake-up call (4 700 m)

Day 6
Rising at around 23:00 pm the previous evening, we enjoy some tea and biscuits before starting at midnight, ascending in single file toward Gillman’s Point, approximately 6 hours away. Climbing though heavy scree, we reach Gillman’s Point on the crater rim (5 700m) at around sunrise and, after a short rest, set off again for Uhuru Peak, 2 1/2 hours away.
